Fans have been asking for months what the main event of UFC Fight Night 154 is, and for the longest time, no one understood. The event takes place June 22 in Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and also local boy Stephen“Wonderboy“ Thompson unavailable to fight so soon after the beating he took against Anthony Pettis in March, it was hard to predict who would headline the card.
The UFC announced this week that the main event of UFC Fight Night 154 is going to be an exciting five-round featherweight fight between“The Korean Zombie“ Chan Sung Jung and Renato Moicano. These are a couple of the best featherweights in the world, which fight should be a lot of fun. It might not be a title battle, but you’d be hard-pressed to view any fans whine about this struggle Jung (14-5) is coming from a last-second KO loss to Yair Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night 139 in one of the most significant MMA fights of all time. Jung was well on his way to winning the bout until he got caught with an unorthodox upward elbow by Rodriguez at the 4:59 mark of the fifth round and endured a shocking knockout loss. His UFC record dropped but the truth he’s won six bonuses in six UFC battles says everything about Jung. Lose or win, Jung is one. It’ll be tricky to recuperate from such a brutal KO following such a warfare of a struggle, however after taking over six months off to cure, hopefully he’s 100 percent healthy and good to go for this battle. The reduction to Rodriguez knocked him out of the featherweight title picture for now, but when he could conquer Moicano, he will jump right back in the mix.
Moicano (13-2-1) is coming from a brutal KO reduction, this one to Jose Aldo back in UFC Fight Night 144. Like Jung, Moicano was winning the struggle until Aldo turned back the clock unleashed a violent flurry of strikes that transpired Moicano out. Overall he’s 5-2 in the UFC and still one of the best featherweights in the world. Besides declines to Aldo and Brian Ortega — there’s no shame to shedding to either of those men — Moicano has been among the best featherweights from the UFC otherwise. Like Jung, he needs to rebound from his last reduction in order to rejoin the featherweight title mix, but there is no reason to thing he can not do it.
The odds for this fight should be interesting if they come out, but if I had to guess, Moicano will be slightly preferred. Bettors will probably be looking to fade Jung coming from that bad loss while Moicano is someone who always gets a ton of respect from the betting public. But it’s definitely a close fight that could go either way, and MMA fans in Carolina should be excited that they landed this exciting struggle as the main event of UFC Fight Night 154.
