The Dayton Flyers men’s basketball team is a midsize major college basketball program that competes in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) representing the University of Dayton in Ohio. The Flyers play their home games.
A 2015 study of college basketball team valuations put Dayton No. 23 in the nation with 2014 corrected earnings in excess of $16.6 million (greatest for non-football conference applications ) along with a valuation of almost $84 million (second highest for non-football conference programs and higher than programs such as Florida, Texas, and Michigan).
After Miller’s departure for Indiana, the faculty hired Dayton alum Anthony Grant and Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach as head coach on March 30, 2017. Grant previously served at VCU and Alabama. His first season at Dayton watched the Flyers finish the first time because the 05-06 season that the team finished with a losing record.
His season featured breakout freshman Obi Toppin, who headed the group in the A10 to a third place finish. They dropped their first game of the conference championship, and missed the NCAA tournament. They got a five seed but dropped at Colorado in the first round.
Dayton has historic rivalries with several area teams such as Xavier, Wright State, and Miami (Ohio), as well as fellow Catholic colleges such as Marquette, DePaul, and Notre Dame. Dayton has fulfilled Xavier 158 occasions, more than any other opponent, and retains an 84–75 edge in the show through 2019. Dayton and Xavier play for the Blackburn/McCafferty Trophy.
With the passing of Xavier to the Big East at 2013, Dayton searched. Each year Dayton plays with Atlantic 10 rival St. Louis University for the rights to the Arch Baron Cup Arch Baron Cup.
